What to Look for When Choosing a Cuddly Toy for Your Child?

29 April 2020

A cuddly toy is a stand-in for a parent: it lets a child spread their wings and supports their independence. When the grown-ups aren’t around, there’s always a favourite teddy bear, fluffy puppy or furry broccoli instead. Find out what to look for when choosing a cuddly toy for your child.

1. Material

A cuddly toy for a child should be soft and pleasant to chew and cuddle. Since it will often end up in the child’s mouth, it’s best if it doesn’t shed fluff. Also consider any beads, ribbons and other small parts that could be dangerous for a small child. From the point of view of a parent or family member, it’s also important that the toy can be washed in the washing machine.

2. Smell

A cuddly toy should absorb smells easily. It’s through this sense that a child becomes most attached to their comfort toy. A smell associated with their mother heightens their sense of security when she isn’t nearby.

3. Size

Not too big 🙂 Remember that a child wants to be with their favourite cuddly toy always and everywhere. So it will come along to the park, the café, family dinners and holidays too. That’s why the teddy bear should be as portable as possible, but still a size that’s easy to cuddle.

4. Shape

Let your child choose for themselves which teddy bear will be their favourite. It’s often hard for us to predict whether a toy that we consider very pretty and appealing will become the favourite. An interesting option is to let your child draw their friend and have it made to order. This kind of service is becoming more and more popular. Nobody else will have such an original cuddly toy!

Cuddly toys help children learn independence and how to regulate their emotions, and they also give them a sense of security. No wonder they suffer so much when they lose their plush companion.

Luckily, we have a solution for that too 🙂

Protect the favourite teddy with a small notiOne tracker. You can sew it into the toy or tie it to the plush scarf or hat – provided it can be done in a way that’s safe for the child. Together with the free app, notiOne lets you quickly check where the lost comfort toy is.
