Worried about lost house or car keys? Run out of places to look? Here’s what to do when you lose your keys.
Slow down and check your surroundings carefully
We usually look for things in a hurry, which makes them even harder to find. Take a few deep breaths and start again, calmly searching the places where you normally keep the keys you’ve lost. These might be:
- the cabinet in the hallway,
- jacket or trouser pockets,
- your desk,
- the kitchen worktop,
- your handbag.
Also check whether they’re lying on the floor, on the lawn in front of the house or next to the car.
Think about whether you’ve recently changed anything in your surroundings
Think about whether you’ve recently changed the lanyard on your keys, bought a new bag or put on a warmer jacket. Check the clothes you wore previously. Or maybe you’ve put up a new shelf or key hook and haven’t got used to it yet?
Don’t search online
You may be tempted to ask on large local groups or fan pages whether anyone has seen keys like the ones in the photo. Be careful, because if you post from an account bearing your first name and surname, a thief could use that information to identify your exact home address.
Call the last person you saw
A visit to family? A business dinner? A date? Call the people you might have left your keys with. They may be waiting for you in their flat.
Look in the mirror
We all know the children’s tale of Mr Hilary, who searched everywhere for the glasses perched on his own nose. With a mountain of things on our minds and the added pressure of time, we sometimes look for something that’s literally right under our nose. Check whether the keys are in your hand 🙂
Change the locks
When everything else fails, there’s nothing left to do but change the locks. You can rack your brains over how to open the door yourself, but the safest solution is a call to a locksmith. These professionals are usually available 24 hours a day, so whatever time you realise you’ve lost your keys, you’ll get the help you need.
Protect yourself against losing your keys
Instead of living by the saying “wise after the event”, think about what might happen and protect your valuable item before you lose it. A tracker attached to your keys looks like a neat key ring, and thanks to the free app it communicates with, you can check on your phone the address where they were last seen. With notiOne, you’ll know where to look. As a reader of this blog, you can buy it 20% cheaper!
We hope our tips have proved useful and that you’re now holding your previously lost keys in your hand. Pass these tips on to your friends so they don’t have to stress 🙂
