Updated: March 2026.
A lost wallet with your documents inside needs to be treated as urgent. First cancel your ID card and payment cards, then report the loss of your remaining documents. If the wallet was stolen, report it to the police as well. This limits the risk of data fraud, or of loans or instalment purchases being taken out in your name. In 2025, 117,800 lost documents were entered in the DOKUMENTY ZASTRZEŻONE (Restricted Documents) System database, and banks foiled 15,200 attempted loan frauds

1. What to do after losing your wallet
After losing your wallet, start by securing your documents and the money in your account. Don’t wait for the wallet to turn up on its own. Cancel your ID card and cards first, and only then apply for replacement documents. This matters more than the cash itself, because a wallet with documents can be used to impersonate you.
2. How to cancel your ID card
Report your ID card as soon as you notice it’s missing. You can do this at the municipal office, online or in the mObywatel app (Poland’s official digital ID app). If you have an e-ID card, you can also suspend its validity for 14 days, and if the document isn’t found, it will be invalidated. Reporting in mObywatel is available, and since March 2026 the app also supports reporting identity theft and forwarding the case to the relevant office.
Where to report a lost ID card
A lost ID card is reported at the municipal office, online or in mObywatel. If you’re abroad, report the loss of the document at the consulate. Once reported, the ID card is invalidated and a new one is issued free of charge.
How to block your ID card at the bank
After reporting the loss of your ID card, it’s worth restricting the document at your bank straight away. A report at just one bank participating in the DOKUMENTY ZASTRZEŻONE System is enough – the information is passed on to the other participants in the system. This is one of the most important steps after losing a wallet with documents, because it limits the risk of fraud.
3. How to cancel your debit and credit cards
Block your debit and credit cards immediately. The fastest way is in your bank’s app, via the helpline or through online banking. Do this before applying for replacements of your other documents, because here every minute counts.

4. What to do if your vehicle registration certificate was in the wallet
Report a lost vehicle registration certificate at the vehicle registration department. To get a duplicate, you need to submit an application and pay the fees. The fee for issuing a registration certificate alone is PLN 54, and PLN 18.50 for a temporary permit.
5. What to do if you lose your driving licence
A lost driving licence is reported at the vehicle registration department. The fee for issuing a duplicate driving licence is PLN 100. If the document went missing together with your wallet, it’s best to deal with it at the same time as reporting your other lost documents.
6. What else to check after losing your wallet
Try to remember what else was inside. Loyalty cards, slips of paper with passwords, notes containing personal data, ID badges or keys to your letterbox can cause problems too. If there was confidential information in the wallet, change your passwords and check the activity on your most important accounts.
7. What to do after your wallet is stolen
If your wallet was stolen, report it to the police. Simply losing documents doesn’t always require the police, but theft does. This is especially important when, apart from documents, your cards, phone or keys also went missing.

8. How to protect your wallet from getting lost
The simplest way is to protect your wallet before it disappears. If you often put it down in the car, at the office, in a jacket or a bag and then can’t find it, a good solution is the notiOne Slim wallet with a built-in tracker. That way you can quickly check in the app where the wallet was last seen and narrow down where to look.
notiOne Slim is a wallet with a built-in tracker that helps you find a lost wallet faster and reduce the stress of losing your documents, cards or cash. It’s a convenient solution for people who want not only to react after losing a wallet, but above all to reduce the risk of it happening.
