On 1 October 2021, the new e-TOLL electronic toll collection system finally replaced the previous viaTOLL system. e-TOLL is Poland’s electronic toll system, and it applies on the toll sections of roads and motorways in Poland managed by GDDKiA (the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways). Payment of the electronic toll is now checked using satellite positioning and wireless data transmission. For heavier vehicles, it is one of the more convenient ways of paying for journeys. There are many e-TOLL-compatible devices on the market. In this article, you will learn how they differ and how to choose the right one for your needs.
[Update] New e-TOLL rules from 1 July 2023 – what is changing?
The introduction of the e-TOLL system brought with it a new way of collecting tolls. You can pay for a journey with a ticket bought at a petrol station, using the e-TOLL PL BILET app, or with an on-board unit integrated with e-TOLL – after first topping up your account at etoll.gov.pl.
A vehicle fitted with a GPS module appears to be the most convenient option, especially if the car is frequently on the road. The device sends its location to the Ministry of Finance portal. Following the changes that came into force on 1 July 2023, the e-TOLL system is mandatory for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Failure to pay the toll can result in a financial penalty imposed by the Chief Inspectorate of Road Transport or officers of the Customs and Fiscal Service.
There are two types of such devices:
ZSL — an external locating system permanently installed in the vehicle.
OBU — an on-board geolocation unit you can install yourself.
Apart from installing the device itself, you need to register at etoll.gov.pl and download the dedicated e-TOLL app. For a more comfortable journey, it is worth getting a device with an intuitive app that will save you valuable time.

Meet the multifunctional e-TOLL device from notiOne
notiOne GPS PLUS is a convenient alternative to the complicated e-TOLL app.

notiOne GPS PLUS is a convenient alternative to the complicated e-TOLL app.
During the journey, it does not require the notiOne app or the dedicated e-TOLL app to be running constantly or in the background. When travelling with the e-TOLL service switched on in the configuration panel of the notiOne app, you plug the device into a charging socket to ensure a constant power supply. This is because the device then sends location samples to the Ministry of Finance portal more frequently.
notiOne GPS PLUS is first and foremost a tracker, so you can check where your vehicle is at any time. When used as a tracker without the e-TOLL service switched on, the device can be disconnected from the power supply, giving up to 25 hours of operation without charging during continuous, uninterrupted driving. With everyday use, the battery alone lasts up to 6 months.
To start using the e-TOLL device from notiOne, all it takes is 3 steps:
- Download the notiOne app to your smartphone and add your notiOne GPS PLUS device.
- Switch on the e-TOLL option in the app’s configuration settings and generate a business ID and PIN.
- Log in to the portal at www.etoll.gov.pl, add your vehicle, enter the generated business ID and add a payment method for your journeys.
Once logged in to the e-TOLL portal, you can also link a fleet card such as DKV or Flota Orlen and use deferred payments. Now you can hit the road without any trouble!
Installing the e-TOLL device from notiOne
notiOne GPS PLUS is both an OBU and a ZSL device. It requires no installation! Simply pair the device with the notiOne app on your phone and hide the tracker anywhere in the vehicle. That will not be difficult, because the device is small and light – its dimensions and weight are:
- 97 × 25 × 31 mm
- 100 g
notiOne GPS PLUS is compatible with iOS and Android 5.0 and above. It offers up to 25 hours of continuous, uninterrupted driving on a single battery charge. It works in most countries around the world. If you would rather not rely on the device’s battery because you are worried you might not charge it in time, you can easily connect it permanently to any USB port using the cable included in the box.

Using the notiOne GPS PLUS location features with e-TOLL in cars
The notiOne GPS PLUS tracker not only lets you drive along the motorway with peace of mind, but also protects your car against theft by offering full location monitoring of your vehicle. notiOne GPS PLUS gives you advanced configuration options:
- setting the location update frequency when the device is moving,
- setting the location update frequency when the device is stationary,
- theft alert — a notification when the vehicle moves,
- international roaming — locating the object outside Poland as well,
- setting a geofence — when the car leaves the marked area, you get a notification that it has left the zone,
- compatible with the e-TOLL system.
The way you configure the device affects its battery life. If you choose more frequent location updates, the device will use more battery. If you choose less frequent updates, it will run for longer.
notiOne GPS trackers in company cars
The notiOne app lets you monitor a fleet of company cars, and you can share this with other phones that have the notiOne app installed. If your needs are modest and you do not require the extensive configuration options, take a look at the basic version of notiOne GPS. Your fleet can be kept under control from anywhere in the country. With this device, you can view the vehicle’s location on the map with the default refresh setting, without the e-TOLL function and the anti-theft alert.
